Charleswood Renovation
Existing ~1,765 sq. ft. → Renovated ~2,774 sq. ft.
Project Story
This home sits in a mature, high-end neighbourhood near West Confederation Park, Nose Hill Park, and the University of Calgary. The clients wanted to honour the home’s original low-sloped shed-roof character while updating it with a more contemporary feel.
Their priorities included a larger primary suite with a walk-in closet and glass-shower ensuite, a functional feature kitchen, open living spaces, a private office, and a better connection to the rear yard. The former rooftop deck over the garage was converted into interior living space.
Key Design Features
- Light-filled, highly functional feature kitchen
- Open-to-above staircase redesigned around existing structure
- New laundry and mudroom
- Expanded open-concept living and dining areas
- Vaulted, defined front entry
- Improved indoor–outdoor flow to the backyard
Challenges & Solutions
The existing split-level was dated, enclosed, and lacked room for a primary suite without major rework. The dark stairwell and inefficient kitchen required full reconfiguration. We redesigned the stairs around a structural beam to create a wide, open feature staircase.
The low, awkward garage level—previously tied into the basement—was transformed into a proper mudroom and recreation area.
Site grading and retaining walls created unusual level transitions, so the main entry was relocated to a more intuitive family-use level, with the front door raised for a more welcoming presence. The rear mudroom was also repositioned for better access throughout the home.
